Seventeen years ago, our team at Rule29 started something small. A few markers. Some paper. A silly idea. We called it By a Show of Hands.

It began as a quick internal challenge, a reason to step away from our desks, trace our hands, and turn them into turkeys. That’s right. The classic childhood hand turkey.

At first, it was just for fun. But we quickly realized something bigger was happening.In a few minutes of laughter and color, people relaxed. They talked. They shared stories. The room shifted from deadlines and client calls to creativity and connection.

That’s the power of a pause.

Now in its 17th year, By a Show of Hands has grown far beyond our studio. Families, businesses, agencies, and entire school classrooms now join in from across the country. Each one adds their own style, humor, and heart. Some are simple. Some are wild. All of them remind us of one thing: we’re better when we take a moment to make something.

Why It Works

Science backs this up. According to a 2021 American Psychological Association study, just 15 minutes of creative activity a day can lower stress and improve overall well-being. Harvard Health research shows that practicing gratitude increases happiness and strengthens relationships. And a Stanford University study found that small creative acts can boost problem-solving ability by up to 60%.
